    Food & wine

Among the dishes that absolutely represent Friulian cuisine is undoubtedly Frico, the regional standard-bearer around the world, a tasty dish made with fried cheese, to which potatoes, onions, vegetables or herbs can be added. Generally, different ages of Montasio DOP cheese are used, a large, ancient cheese made from the milk of cows driven to the alpine pastures, with a cooked, semi-hard texture and a characteristic soft, delicate and balanced flavour.

    Itinerary

A very interesting itinerary from a historical, naturalistic and ethnographic point of view. Along the route we pass through the three main valleys of the Julian Alps: Val Fella, Val Raccolana and Valle del Rio del Lago. By bicycle, one can appreciate these territories, which are popular with road cyclists as training for more daring exploits.

    Author’s recommendation

Type of track: a challenging circuit in terms of length and elevation gain, which is appropriate for people who are rather physically fit. It can be travelled with any bicycle with gears. It runs completely on paved roads: roughly 50 per cent on cycle tracks, the remainder on roads with very limited traffic. Car traffic is more frequent in the summer and at weekends. In winter, access is not guaranteed in the Raccolana and Rio del Lago valleys, even if the roads are cleared, because of potential ice sheets and layers of snow. The area is very cold in winter and cool during summer.

    Safety information

Challenging route in terms of length and altitude difference, suitable for slightly trained people. Practicable with all bicycles equipped with gears. It is completely on paved roads: a little over half on cycle paths, the remainder on roads with little traffic. There is more vehicle traffic in summer and at weekends. Winter practicability is not guaranteed in the Val Raccolana and in the Rio del Lago Valley, even though the roads are gritted, due to possible ice sheets and layers of snow.

    Tips and suggestions

Very cold area in winter and cool in summer.
