Follow the canals in Udine and find the taverns

This is Udine among waterways and wines, which have always been fundamental elements of life in Friuli: the canals, fed by the Tagliamento and Ledra rivers, in some places are still uncovered and visible along the central streets of the city. They symbolically link the life of the many historic taverns with the succession of many activities carried out along the river banks in the past. They will lead you to experience the places where the authentic representation of the Life of this Community takes place even today.
Aquila nera, Alla Tavernetta, Grappolo d'Oro, Il Vecchio Tram, Allegria, Osteria & Staffa, Del Lepre, Speziaria pei Sani, Alla Ghiacciaia, Al Cappello, Pieri Mortadele, Ai Frati: are the osterie (taverns) along an ideal walking path that tells the history of the city from an unusual perspective.
It is not uncommon for the card games of briscola or tresette to be played on their wooden tables, and sometimes even a round of morra (a typical betting game) could occur, despite being forbidden since 1928. But, you know, traditions are hard to die...
The kitchens serve hot dishes of beans, tripe, polenta, frico (cheese dish) or the traditional meatballs, always accompanied by a glass or bottle of wine.
At one time, only local wine was served in the taverns, which, however, due to the low alcohol content, did not last long. Pests and diseases further lowered the quantity and quality, so much so that in the 19th century, it had become common practice to “cut” the local wine with others of different origin, often from southern Italy. From this originates the term, still in use today, “tai di vin” (cut of wine), to ask the innkeeper for a glass of good wine. As for the game of morra, the tradition of an aperitif in an osteria resists the passage of time.
