Highly satisfying route along the southern slope of Mt. Matajur, with small summit loop.
We leave the car in Masseris (760 m), in the small parking lot before the village. We continue on the road until we locate, on the right, the trail marker for the path to Matajur - trail marker 736a. After an initial steep slope, the ground turns into a good mule track, always uphill. You walk through the forest, evenly uphill, to the clearing of Tamorska (1090 m). Here we cross the dirt road and continue uphill on the little path that cuts a hairpin bend in the forest road, which we pick up again shortly after. The trail now comes off to the left, well marked. At an altitude of 1235 m we ignore the fork to Rifugio Pelizzo and up to the next fork, which takes us onto one of the most beautiful sections of the hike: the Rommel Road, flat for a good stretch and winding along the slopes of Monte Glava. At 1440 m (panel) we take the path uphill, roughly reaching one of the summits of Mt. Glava (1519 m, for views toward the elongated ridges on the Slovenian side and to Mt. Nero). Last climb out of the woods to the small church of Christ the Redeemer (1641 m).
To descend by making a small summit loop, we descend by forking the trail that starts opposite the entrance to the little church and in a few minutes takes us to Dom Na Matajure (1550 m), a refuge built and run by volunteers from Planinska družina Benečije. We take the path eastward in the direction of Liucco/Livek, and disembark at the panel on Rommel; from here, we descend by the ascent route.
