Route along the Silent River that combines nature and history: air-raid shelters, churches, monuments, and views of Cervignano.
The green area “Blood Donors' Park”, a meeting and play place, is the starting point of the walk. Heading east along the dirt path on the riverbank, you reach the remains of an air-raid shelter dating back to the First World War. Further on, the dirt surface becomes paved and, after passing two calm bends, you arrive at a small clearing near an old washhouse. Nearby is the Church of San Michele Arcangelo where the Antiquarium can be visited.
Continuing, to your right in the adjacent Vicolo Corto, a second air-raid shelter from the same wartime period is visible. After passing the large river bend, you enter the urban area. Crossing the Austro-Hungarian iron bridge, following the bank of the old river port and descending along the river, you reach the monument commemorating the Nazi massacre. Alternatively, once at the Austro-Hungarian bridge, you can continue the walk heading east and, after crossing Via XXIV Maggio, continue alongside, for much of the way, the Ausa River. Here monuments testify to the town’s history during the Great War: in the port square, the plaque remembering the entrance of Italian troops into Cervignano and, nearby, the monument to the soldier of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Proceeding along Via Trento, characterized by small fishermen’s houses, you soon take the pedestrian path that runs along the watercourse and, after passing the old railway bridge, you walk until you reach the Austro-Hungarian iron bridge.
