Monte Canin - Ferrata Brigata Julia

Mount Canin is one of the well-known and most visited mountains in the Julian Alps. The Ferrata Brigata Julia can be considered the normal Italian route to Mount Canin; the route from Val Resia is rarely used, because of its length; while the more historic route Via delle Cenge, which can be found on the same wall, however, remains a mountaineering route reserved for those who can do
without the safety ropes. The ferrata starts from the peak of what remains of the Canin glacier and was equipped in 1962-63 by the Alpine Brigade Julia, who recently also took care of the restoration.
Access
From Tarvisio, the state road to Passo del Predil passes the town of Cave and arrives at a junction near the lake. Leave the state road and turn right to Sella Nevea (21 km from Tarvisio). Alternatively, climb from Chiusaforte along the Val Raccolana (17.5 km).
Approach
From the top station of the former cable car of Canin di Sella Nevea (1122 m) we follow the track of the ski slope up to and at an altitude of 1650 meters, where we continue to the right on the path CAI 635 that, skirting the base of the east wall of Bila Pec, leads to the refuge Gilberti-Soravito (1850 m, 2 hours from Sella Nevea; it is possible to go up here with the Canin cable car, open from mid-July to early September). From the Gilberti-Soravito hut follow the CAI 632 trail, which climbs the valley west of the refuge to Sella Bila Pec (2005 m, ruins of the old Canin shelter). The wide path continues at high altitude, high compared to the karst plateau of Foran dal Mus. After crossing some canals, the path leads to a crossroad of paths (2018 m; trail-table) at the base of a large detrital valley. We follow the path on the left, climbing along narrow turns and a steep track, to reach the remains of the Canin glacier. The trail continues to the left along a rocky area and along the glacier, almost entirely covered with glacier shale and, after passing a rocky ridge, leads to the base of the snowy gully that separates Mount Canin from Mount Ursic. Climb the snow-covered slope (an ice axe may be useful) and you reach the start at the base of the rocks on the right of the gully (2380 m; 2 hours).
The ferrata
See layout and directions in the annex (route detail).
From the end of the via ferrata, a trail, which winds near the summit ridge, leads shortly to the summit of Mount Canin (2587 m, 1 hours; 3 hours from the refuge Gilberti-Soravito).
Descent
Head back in the same direction (2h 15’ to the Gilberti Soravito refuge; 3h 30’ to Sella Nevea).
Or: from the exit of Via Ferrata Julia, we descend along the ridge to a pass. After passing a small wall, we return to the ridge near a deep chasm, and after a series of ups and downs, we reach the exit of the trail Via delle Cenge. We continue along the ridge (short sections equipped) and then we descend on the south side. Once reached the lower detrital slopes we head east at high altitude for the trail which continues along a ridge downhill to Dom Petra Skalarja. We continue straight until we look out onto the valley located south of the natural window of Mount Forato. A short, equipped section allows us to descend into the valley, which we then cross slightly uphill aiming at the ski lifts. Following the track of a ski slope we go up to the Forcella del Forato (2282 m) and then we descend on a marked path, through stones and debris, up to Sella Prevala (2067 m) where we join the CAI 636 trail (2 hours from the summit of M. Canin). Over a downhill path through the Vallone di Prevala, with a short climb, we reach the Rifugio Gilberti-Soravito and the top station of the cable car (45’; 2h 45’ from the summit of M. Canin). Using the gondola or along the ski slope we finally return to Sella Nevea (1h 20’ on foot).
