A cycling route of great natural value: from Lignano Sabbiadoro to the protected area of the Caorle lagoon, with a stop at La Brussa and its evocative fishing valleys.
The route starts from Lignano and crosses Friuli Venezia Giulia and Veneto. You cycle towards Bibione skirting Valgrande, a fishing valley with high biodiversity considered an area of great landscape interest. Once a marshy area, thanks to reclamation interventions it is now suitable for farming mullets, sea bass, eels, and gilthead bream. The route continues to the Castello locality crossing La Brussa, an area reclaimed in the 1920s and 1930s, where alongside intensive agriculture, aquaculture still persists: in its shallow water basins, eels and other fish are farmed. Cycling towards the sea you reach Valle Vecchia, the terminal part of La Brussa, a natural oasis rich in birds, aquatic species, and flora, and partly skirt the Caorle lagoon, characterized by typical casoni. Returning towards Lignano, you pass by the Punta Tagliamento lighthouse near the river mouth.
The ferry between Bibione and La Brussa plus the boat transfer between Bibione and Lignano Sabbiadoro are operational only in summer.
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.
Circular route on cycle paths, secondary roads, and dirt tracks, all in good rideable condition. Partially signposted route.
When the summer bike+boat services are not active, it is possible to reach Valle Vecchia via the route along La Brussa and return on the same path.
Public-transport-friendly
Intermodal transport with the bicycle in tow: Lignano Sabbiadoro is reachable daily with the public BiciBus service only in July and August. It connects the seaside town with Latisana and Udine. The service runs several daily trips.
