Challenging circular hike leading to Rifugio Semenza through meadows rich in rare floral varieties and animal species such as chamois and mouflons.
Leaving the Piancavallo infopoint, turn right onto Via Barcis up to Hotel 1301 Inn. Near the hotel, take the service road along the football fields and continue to Casera Capovilla. Follow the trail of Sorgente del Tornidor CAI 925 following the white-red signs.
After passing the spring, the trail crosses meadows rich in rare floral varieties including: asphodel, Lilium carniolicum, golden lily, martagon lily, edelweiss, and various species of orchids. Upon entering the forest beside the stream, there is a short equipped passage with a cable requiring attention. The ascent is challenging and the slope decreases only briefly. Continuing ascent, a stunning panoramic view opens to the south, with the eastern side of Val Grande (Monti Caulana and Colosser) hosting a rich community of local chamois.
You reach the Forcella Val Grande offering a splendid view of the wild glacial Valle Sperlonga; this marks the end of the most challenging part of the route. Proceed along CAI 925 through a wide glacial basin where karstic sinkholes are visible, preserving snow all year round. This area is inhabited by the rock ptarmigan. After passing the bivouac Semenza, the refuge is quickly reached, around which the rare silver geranium grows.
Continue along trail CAI 923. On the first descent section, near the cliff rocks, you can see the splendid rock bellflower. Proceed over rough terrain to the Sasso della Madonna. Turn left on CAI 922 to Casera Palantina. From here, leave CAI 922 and continue on CAI 993 along an almost flat path through a forest of tall beeches and firs. A short but steep ascent leads to the Baita Arneri. Exit CAI 993 and descend along the service path below the Tremol 1 chairlift.
Follow the white-red signs until you find trail CAI 924 and Casera Capovilla. Return via Via Barcis alongside sports facilities and finally to Piazzale della Puppa.

Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.
This route requires good physical fitness. Technically, the exposed sections are limited and short. However, the ascent of Val Grande and the length make the route challenging.
There are some rest and refreshment points along the route; it is advisable to check well in advance the opening periods and times of facilities, such as refuges and huts along the way.
From a wildlife perspective: the eastern side of Val Grande consists of the rugged slopes of the Monti Caulana and Colosser, hosting the largest community of chamois in the area, with about fifty individuals spotted. In the upper valley it is possible to see mouflons, deer, and in very rare cases, bears.
Standard hiking equipment. Appropriate clothing is recommended to face a short exposed equipped section.
