Hike on the trails of our soldiers and the Carnic porters along Pal Piccolo, one of the most contested summits of the Carnic front during the First World War.
The hike leads from the But valley floor to the summit of Pal Piccolo through the most important locations of the battles fought on the contested summit of Pal Piccolo. Ascending, you reach the area of the former war cemetery, a sacred place full of suggestion near the chapel of the Btg. Val Tagliamento. Shortly after, proceed on the CAI 401C trail of the "Carnic porters," reaching the Cantore shelters and the Cavernone, also mentioned by Ilaria Tuti in her book "Fiore di roccia." The wide path leads to the summit area where Italian and Austrian trenches are just a few dozen meters apart, all perfectly walkable and restored in recent years by volunteers in a spirit of cross-border cooperation to honor all the fallen of those battles. Not to be missed are the armored dome on the summit and the visit to the Austrian trench line with rebuilt barracks (explanatory signs on site).
At the end of the hike, a visit to the small but rich Great War museum of Timau is recommended.
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.
Due to the karst nature of the area, there are no water sources along the route; bring sufficient water supply as it is a rather long hike.
In autumn 2023, a large landslide affected trail 401 ascending from the Passo di M. Croce Carnico, making it unusable. The ascent from the Italian side is therefore currently only possible on the recommended trail.
The village of Timau is served by local public transport with a daily bus line.
From the village to the start of the route, allow about 30 minutes of walking.
From Tolmezzo, follow the But valley via S.S. 52BIS passing the villages of Paluzza and Timau. After a tunnel, on the left, descend to the cross-country ski track and the large parking lot (clear signs).
Parking near the cross-country ski track.
