Sagrado

Sagrado lies on the left bank of the river Isonzo, at the foot of Mount San Michele.

In the 16th century it was one of the Fees of Conti della Torre even if its origins are older.

The first official documents mentioning Sagrado come from Venice and date back to the 15th century.

The village, centre of the battles of the World War I between 1915 and 1917, is therefore rich of remains of this period.

Among the places to visit: beside San Martino del Carso, almost completely destroyed during World War I, there is also Mount San Michele, until 1916 a stronghold of the Austro-Hungarians, and now considered a holy area of the fallen.

There are also several historical and nature tours on the karst area.
