Ronchi dei Legionari
The town of Ronchi dei Legionari, at the foot of the Karst, was inhabited already in the pre-Roman age.
In the Roman Age some rural villas were built, whose structures have been recently found along the perimeter of Friuli Venezia Giulia's airport.
Together with the neighbouring territories Ronchi dei Legionari was subject to continuous raids, by the Counts of Gorizia as well; it went through a peaceful period in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and, in 1850, it had a Podestà as the council representative and in 1912 it rose to the rank of Village.
The location of the regional airport, its name contains the word "legionari" (legionaries) from the expedition organized by Gabriele D'Annunzio that on 12th September 1919 occupied Rijeka. To recall this event, also known as the "March on Rijeka", on the state road that from Ronchi dei Legionari leads to Monfalcone, you will find a plaque on the house where the poet Gabriele D'Annunzio lived, not far from a column located opposite the town's cemetery.
