Prepotto

Prepotto's history is strictly connected to that of Castelmonte: the today's Sanctuary was originally a roman fortification which became later a fortified village.

The Sanctuary of Castelmonte was first mentioned in a document of 1175.

Castelmonte was owned before by the Church of Santo Stefano in Cividale and later since 1253 by the Church of Santa Maria.

In the 13th century the Church of Santa Maria in Castelmonte was considered the most important church of the Patriarchate of Aquileia.

The Sanctuary was burnt in 1469 and almost all destroyed by an earthquake in 1511.

It was enlarged and adorned in the 17th century.  The Sanctuary was restored after the World War II and it always maintained its original structure.
