Ovaro
Situated along the wide and sunny Valle del Degano, Ovaro is a small pearl of Carnia and one of the “Borghi autentici d’Italia” ("authentic villages of Italy").
It saw prosperous times, as witnessed today by some of the manor houses. The historically significant economic activities are documented in a number of small exhibitions that can be visited on request (for information: Tourist Information and Reception Office of Ovaro). The “Museo del Legno e della Segheria Veneziana” (Wood and Venetian Sawmill Museum") reveals the process of wood processing, which was a significant resource for this territory especially in the modern age during the dominion of the Serenissima. The "Planelas e Scugjelas" exhibition, on the other hand, bears historical witness to the work and products of the kilns of Alta Carnia. Finally, coal was another important resource, extracted in the mines until the first half of the last century. The miners' experience is brought to life today in the former mine of Cludinico.
The valley is a destination for magnificent walks, more or less demanding, towards Col Gentile, Monte Arvenis and the Zoncolan, or among the hamlets of the valley floor where historic buildings can be visited. Also worth seeing is the Pieve di Santa Maria di Gorto parish church, located on a rocky crag between the hamlets of Agrons and Cella: it is one of the ancient baptismal churches of Carnia, situated on the "Cammino delle Pievi" path. As well as the famous and ambitious ascent of the Zoncolan, there are also numerous MTB routes.
Among the most traditional festivals there are the Sagra del Malgaro in August and the Antico Mercato di San Martino which takes place on 11 November.
