Moruzzo

Moruzzo is a town in the Friuli Collinare area, which on clear days provides an amazing panoramic view from the hills to the plain, up to the lagoon.

The origins of the town are very ancient; many finds found in the surroundings of the Castle and at the foot of the Hill of Moruzzo consist of tombs and urns containing objects and tools dating back to the 6th and 5th centuries B.C.

The toponym derives from the Latin word murus and it probably means that in the Roman age in the territory there was a fortified building; such a supposition is justified by the fact that, at that time, the boundary of the countryside around Aquileia passed through the territories of Moruzzo and Rive d'Arcano.

In the Middle Ages four castles characterised by different stories and related to the vicissitudes of the families that owned them were built in the territory of Moruzzo: the Castle of Gruagno, the Castle of Moruzzo and the two Castles of Brazzacco.

Don't miss a visit to the enchanting hamlet of Santa Margherita del Gruagno, which features a Romanesque parish church.

The Linden of Moruzzo is one of Italy's oldest trees: in fact, it is mentioned in some botanical texts of over 500 years ago.
