Montereale Valcellina

Montereale Valcellina, called "Calaresius" until 1291, is a place of ancient settlements at the foot of the Alpine region and represents one of the most important historical and archaeological areas of the whole region.

Excavation works carried out on the surrounding hills discovered several finds going back to the Neolithic Age (III millennium b.C.), to the Bronze Age (XIII-XI century b.C.) and to the Roman epoch (II-I century b.C.); remains of necropolis (VIII century b.C. - VII century a.C.) and ruins of buildings, among which a house near the Church of S. Rocco (II-I century b.C.), and a house going back to the period between the end of the VII and the beginning of the IV century b.C. were found.

Montereale Valcellina is also well known for its fellow citizen, Domenico Scandella, a miller called "Menocchio", who, in 1599, was sent to the stake for heresy.

His story was recreated by Carlo Gizberg in his book "Il formaggio e i vermi".

On top of the surrounding mountains, reachable thanks to some footpaths, is also possible to admire a wonderful panoramic view.
