Fiume Veneto: lush nature and thriving culture
Located in the heart of the Friulian plain, the Municipality of Fiume Veneto embodies the perfect blend of tradition, culture and innovation. With a population of approximately 12,000 inhabitants and a vibrant and welcoming community, it boasts deep and ancient roots, with historical records going back to at least 996 A.D., when the river “Fiume” - which gives the name to the town – is first mentioned in writing. In 1911, the name was changed by royal decree by adding the adjective “Veneto” (despite the town being located in Friuli) to help distinguish it from the similarly named city of Fiume, which today forms part of Croatia (Rijeka).
A land of water and history
Fiume Veneto, aka Vildiflum in the Friulian language, is criss-crossed with resurgent rivers that have shaped the landscape over the centuries and prompted the development of agriculture and the crafts. Here one can find numerous places of historical, natural and archaeological significance: from the Neolithic remains discovered in Bannia, to the ancient riverside hamlets such as Fiume Piccolo, also nicknamed “Little Murano” because of its brightly coloured 16th century facades. The Mortol Riverside Park, with its walkways and cycle paths, has become a veritable urban oasis, much appreciated for strolls, public events and open-air activities.
A territory to be discovered a step at a time
There are many cultural and spiritual itineraries that help visitors discover the ancient, frescoed chapels, such as that of San Giacomo (St. James) at Praturlone, San Girolamo (St. Jerome) at Marzinis - which contains frescoes attributed to Il Pordenone - or Santa Maria di Tavella (St. Mary of Tavella), the oldest religious building in the municipality. Each one is the proud keeper of a piece of local history and living proof of people’s devotion. Put together, they make of Fiume Veneto a true open air museum.
The area also offers many places of outstanding natural beauty such as the Marzinis Forest, regarded as a highly valuable community asset, as well as the starting point of the “10,000 steps to your health” paths, an initiative by the Federsanità health body, designed to promote a healthier lifestyle in touch with nature.
Nowadays, Fiume Veneto is an ideal destination for those who love peace and quiet, history, nature and slow-paced tourism, a place capable of adding value to its territory by keeping an eye to the future whilst staying mindful of its roots. A fascinating destination for a cultural trip, an excursion in nature or simply to rediscover the authentic spirit of Friuli Venezia Giulia.
