This is one of the longest stages of the entire Walk of Peace. It is extremely rich in terms of history and culture, extending far beyond the period of the Great War.

An extended itinerary that creates an extremely interesting stage, both from a historical and cultural point of view and for the beauty of its landscape and natural environment. Cividale del Friuli, is a historic town declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2012. As the central point of this very long stage, the urban centre is worth a visit and may encourage hikers to stay for a while and divide this more than twenty-kilometre route into two separate days. This choice would give the traveller the time, otherwise rather short, to fully enjoy a visit to this fascinating and historical citadel. Cividale del Friuli, considered a little jewel of Friuli Venezia Giulia,  was the capital of the first Lombard Duchy in Italy.  In there it is possible to find a rich variety of monuments, museums and well-preserved historical and archaeological sites that can be enjoyed by visitors from all walks of life. The Natisone Valleys, with  the river wedged between mountainous reliefs, add even more charm and natural beauty to the route.

    Author’s recommendation

Given the length, variety and complexity of the interesting opportunities and experiences to be discovered along this route, we recommend dividing the itinerary into two parts, with a stop in Cividale for an in-depth visit of the town.
