Gorizia/Gorica, of Roman origin, which developed over the centuries under the Habsburg Empire and was a critical and important crossroads during the Great War, and Nova Gorica, founded in 1947 on the edge of a newly established border, have not been chosen as the European Capital of Culture 2025 by chance. The loop circuit that runs through these two cities, from one site to the next, crossing a border that was dismantled in 2007, leads tourists through the historical and cultural highlights that are now in place. This stage offers an insight into and understanding of the horrors and destruction caused by the First and Second World Wars, and by extension, by all wars. The mistakes of the past are thus contrasted with the vibrant pulse of a city now flourishing, rich in culture and vitality, finally united.
