Long but easy hike to explore the Gran Monte range without having to take more difficult routes.
At Monteaperta (600 m), we spot the trail markers for Gran Monte, which we follow to the "Fonte Genzianella" fountain; the trail passes the last houses and climbs a concrete ladder to plunge into the woods. Near a stream we find a fork: we take path 711 to the right. We move into the woods-at first on the edge with the village meadows-until we reach a first stone fountain, located at a bend in the trail; continuing along the path of a wide, shady mule track, we pass a stream-again, excellent water available-and begin to climb in elevation, with the trail taking several long switchbacks. As we pass 850 meters in elevation, the forest suddenly disappears to give way to a beautiful view: the grassy southern slope of Mt. Briniza is cut by our mule track, which takes its time to climb back up-again winding, but at a steeper gradient than we have faced so far.
Without a hitch we reach Sella Kriz (1540 m), the main crest of the Gran Monte complex. This fork is dominated by the large crucifix. In the metal box is the summit book, or rather "of the fork."
