Not the most aesthetically pleasing route for Monte Santo di Lussari and Cima del Cacciatore, but definitely the most direct (excluding the lift!) and the one with the highest training factor. Worth doing at least once, as an intense form of pilgrimage (or penance).
From Valbruna (810 m), we take path 612 and follow it closely up to Monte Santo di Lussari. The ascent leaves no respite, developing with a steep gradient – and without easing sections – in a uniform forest. After passing Alpe Limerza (about 1390 m) there is a short level section, which soon becomes steep and intense again. Path 612 leads us to the less charming side of Monte Santo, but in a moment we are overlooking the wonderful village of Lussari (1780 m), on the “heart” side usable as a photogenic frame. We cross the village, possibly take a break, and continue onward; we then reach a junction (1715 m) where we go straight on, taking path 613 which climbs into the forest. Some steep sections, others level – the path is pleasant to follow. When we exit the forest, the panorama changes: we face a beautiful rocky basin. We follow the path without deviating, and reach a second basin, almost suspended, dominated by screes. We keep right following the slope and reach the start of the equipped section (2018 m): about fifty meters of elevation gain to do with the aid of a cable, nothing difficult but some caution is needed at the beginning. In a moment we are on top of Cima del Cacciatore (2071 m, summit cross and summit book). Return on the same route.
