Hiking route along the second stage of the "Carnic Traverse - Way of Peace," from the Sillaner H utte to the Obstansersee Hutte
moderate
Distance 8.8 km
Duration3:40 h
Ascent423 m
Descent570 m
Highest point2,648 m
Lowest point2,302 m
The second stage starts from the Sillaner Hutte and follows the border ridge past magnificent, aerial landscapes. Trail No. 403 first accompanies you toward M. Arnese, which you skim while keeping to its northern slope (a short detour is possible to reach the summit).
The trail then passes near the Pontegrotta Peak and descends to the Nemes Saddle, where a small cemetery lies in memory of soldiers who fell during the fighting of the Great War.
From the saddle one ascends more markedly the northern slope of M. La Muta and with a long traverse reaches the Cima di Valbella and the Montagna del Ferro. In continuous eastward progression one reaches the wide basin of Obstanser Lake, which is reached by a final downward traverse, leaving the main displuvial. Near the lake lies the Obstansersee Hutte, a stage stop on this second section.
Author’s recommendation
The small Austro-Hungarian cemetery at Nemes Saddle is worth visiting. Along the route are numerous remains from the First World War.
