Along the ridge of Friuli Venezia Giulia's highest mountains lies an aquatic divide nestled up around an elevation of 2,000m.
Volaia Lake, on the Italian-Austrian border, emerges as one of the most popular destinations in the entire mountain region of Friuli.
Originating in the
ice ages, this small lake basin embedded in the cliffs reflects the grey slopes of the Volaia Mountains at sunset, in an endless spectacle that is repeated with each passing day.
On its shores, the
Lambertenghi-Romanin refuge (get informed about opening) and the WolayerSee Hutte, on Austrian soil, offer the opportunity to enjoy mountain cuisine and soak up the sunrise in this majestic and pure environment.
Recent and ancient history meet on the shores of the lake thanks to the special features of this site: the
Geotrail chronicles primitive treasures, and the many
fossils found on land that populated these grounds when the entire area was a deep tropical sea.
The
Volaia Trench commemorates the drama of
World War I with military artifacts, recovered by volunteers, that bear witness to one of the darkest periods in the history of the 20th century. For
rock climbers, the Volaia Pass complex provides dozens of routes on the walls of
Mount Capolago and
Lastrons del Lago, guaranteeing fun for all climbers with routes covering all levels of ability.
