The Theme Park "Abschnitt Saisera" is an open-air museum dedicated to the Great War, created in 2012 in the heart of the Val Saisera, in the municipality of Malborghetto Valbruna. Those who visit it can discover what is left of the "Vordere Saisera” line, one of the two defensive lines built by the Austro-Hungarian troops during the conflict to counter a possible Italian invasion coming from the Val Dogna. It must not be forgotten that this area like all the rest of the Tarvisiano, was at that time part of the Habsburg Empire.
The itinerary is composed of three rings, which can be walked along as a single path or separately depending on your interest and physical abilities. The paths, although not marked as CAI, are very obvious and all the evidence of the past is accompanied by signs with explanations and historical images.
THE CORRIDOR DUG INSIDE THE SASSO BUCATO BY AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN SOLDIERS ENSURED A SAFE PASSAGE FROM ENEMY GUNFIRE.
The first ring (highlighted in green) is the easiest and is practically all flat. The starting point is near the car park of the Montasio Shelter (932 m. a.s.l.) almost at the end of the paved road of the Val Saisera. Turning back along the road, after about 200 metres turn right on a forest path where a sign shows the entire itinerary. You enter the forest and start walking along what used to be the winding line of the valley "Vordere Saisera", first passing a post for a reflector and then a guard post. After about half an hour of walking, you cross the bed of a creek: if you look south, you can distantly see the peaks of Jôf di Somdogna and Jôf di Montasio. Afterwards, you return to the forest reaching a listening post and a grenade-throwing post before reaching the impressive"Sasso Bucato” (perforated boulder) and the soldiers barracks "Villa Anna".
At this point you reach the first crossroads: turning right you start the second ring (blue) while on the left you continue on the green one that, after passing "U Kaverne" and the "MG Kaverne", takes you back to the starting point. The blue ring, slightly more difficult than the green one, leads you quickly to the foot of the Piccolo Nabois (1055 metres a.s.l.) where there is a big cannon post the so-called "Fuss Nabois".
Behind this, the third ring begins (red) with steeper slopes that rise up to the first part of the mountain and lead to the highest point of the Park, the "Geschütz Kaverne" (1224 metres a.s.l.). From here you continue following the red signs to close the ring and return to the section near Fuss Nabois.
FROM THE TOP OF THE SASSO BUCATO IN THE BACKGROUND YOU CAN SEE THE END OF THE VAL SAISERA AND THE BEGINNING OF THE VAL DOGNA, THE BORDER BETWEEN THE KINGDOM OF ITALY AND THE AUSTRO-HUNGARIAN EMPIRE DURING THE CONFLICT.
At this point turn right to finish the walk along the blue path where you can find the remains of a field kitchen, and return to the green ring that leads to the starting point.
