Memorial Stones Trail

The itinerary of the open-air Museum of Mt. San Michele partly follows the so-called "Memorial Stones Trail", which comprises 53 monuments commemorating several divisions (including Austro-Hungarians) that fought on this height until the Sixth Battle of the Isonzo.
It was created after the Italian Parliament declared this height a "Sacred Area for the splendour of glory" in October 1922.

You can start the "Memorial Stones Trail" from Height 4, where the stone dedicated to the
Brescia Brigade lies, destroyed in 1945 and recently re-built by the Karst Speleological Association of San Martino del Carso. This summit was strenuously fought over during the first six battles of the Isonzo and probably inspired the poet Ungaretti for his poem "Morning", written in the rear lines of Santa Maria la Longa in the winter of 1917.
Continue walking up to the fork leading to Height 3, where you can see a memorial stone dedicated to Italian and Hungarian soldiers, who became brothers after they died (as indicated by the inscription). You can then move on to the other two heights of the mount and finally go back to the departure point.

This itinerary is also a great opportunity to visit the open-air Museum of Mt. San Michele. Following the path, in fact, you can see the main remnants of the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies, besides numerous trenches, bunkers and passageways that complete the Museum.
