Near Solarie cabin, the departure point of the excursion to Mt. Kolovrat, you can admire a monument dedicated to Alpine soldier Riccardo di Giusto, thought to have been the first Italian recruit who fell during the Great War. This monument, standing on a roadside rock, is a small truncated pyramid with an iron statue of a flying eagle at the top. It was donated by the National Alpine Corps Association of Cividale del Friuli following a number of researches that identified the name of the first casualty.
The monument bears the following inscription: "Here / the Alpine Corps of Cividale / loaded their weapons / sprang to / death and glory / offering on the altar / of their Motherland / the first fallen soldier / of the Great War / Riccardo di Giusto / on 24th May 1915". This Alpine soldier was immediately awarded a Golden Medal for military valour, his body rested in San Volfango until 1923 and was then moved to the Ossuary of Udine, his birthplace.
