Magic Tagliamento

The river Tagliamento divides Friuli in half: the spring is located near Passo della Mauria, in Veneto, at 1.195 meters on sea level, and the mouth is located near Lignano Sabbiadoro, 178 km downstream.

Even if October is not the right season due to lack of water, we decided anyhow to explore the river.

We inflated the kayak at home in Gracco and set off to reach the Cimano bridge where we downloaded the kayak from the car. Then we started to load it with backpacks, tent, sleeping bags extra clothing and food, the weight of each backpack was around 25 kg.

As soon as we hit the water, we were far away from civilization as the river bed is very wide, at sometimes few kilometers from bank to bank, with many different strams. The water flow was smooth with some easy rapids, going from 30 cm to a couple of meters, in the deepest parts.

The narrowest point is about 150 meters wide at Pinzano’s bridge where the river goes through a rocky thin passage.

The River Tagliamento has an interesting ecosystem, being considered the last morphologically intact river of the Alps. There is little invasive intervention of man therefore the river is studied by universities and research institutes.
In the late afternoon we set camp south of Spilimbergo, planting the tent on soft sand.
The next day we started paddling again and the idea was to go all the way to Codroipo or Latisana, but we were forced to drop out by the Dignano river due to lack of water.
A great trip to be repeated in spring, with more water... stay tuned !
