The eventful history of this landmark began in
1908 when it was erected at the behest of the
Tourist Club of Trieste, to a design by
architect Carlo Hesky, to mark the sixtieth anniversary of the reign of Emperor Franz Joseph. The construction was 11 metres high and built of karst stone. It was called
the Viewpoint of the Jubilee (
Vedetta del Giubileo).
After remaining unscathed during the
Great War, unlike many others in the area, it was transferred to the management of the Giulie Alpine Society (
Società Alpina delle Giulie) in 1922 when it was renamed
“the Viewpoint of Italy” (
Vedetta Italia).
The original structure of the viewpoint
was demolished by the German army in 1944 so that it would not be a target for the Allies during the Second World War.
The present-day viewpoint was reconstructed by the Giulie Alpine Society after World War II in more or less the same position as its predecessor.
Like most of the scenic viewpoints in the Karst of Trieste, it features a wind rose on its pavement and enjoys a spectacular view of the Gulf and the Karst of
Trieste and Slovenia.
The site is located
Sanctuary of Mount Grisa, above the
outdoor climbing gym in the town of Prosecco. The viewpoint can be reached by taking the
Vicentina Way and then CAI Trail n. 12.
The Karst is home to
many other scenic viewpoints, used by fishermen for their daily activities, including the
Viewpoint for Tuna Fishing, the
Slataper Viewpoint (near Santa Croce) and the
Tiziana Weiss Viewpoint (in the area of the Aurisina Cave), all of which can be reached by following the
Fishermen's Trail (CAI Trail n. 1).
