At the beginning of the 19th century, unlike today, the village of
Opicina was not easily accessible from the centre of
Trieste because it was originally connected only by the Commercial Road, commissioned by the Governor of Trieste, Karl von Zinzendorf, in 1779.
However, trade between the
Free Port and the rest of the
Habsburg Empire was growing exponentially and required a
more convenient and viable transport route that allowed the transit of wagons. As a result, the present-day New Road to Opicina was officially opened in
1830. To commemorate the event, an
Obelisk was erected in honour of Franz II (later known as Franz I).
The Napoleonic Way begins (or ends, depending on the direction) at the foot of the Opicina Obelisk, which links Opicina to Prosecco. The path is surrounded by woods and offers spectacular views of the city of Trieste and the sea, as well as of
Miramare Castle and the
Victory Lighthouse.
