The Civic Archaeological Museum of Muggia was inaugurated in
1997. Housed in the
Casa Veneta building in the historic centre of
Muggia, it is a treasured destination for people who love archaeology and visitors interested in exploring the history of the area.
Its collection offers a broad overview of
artefacts from approximately 25 archaeological sites scattered around Muggia, including areas that are no longer accessible to the public, such as the remains of ancient Roman villas and piers, which have now been submerged by rising sea levels.
The collection features a wide range of handcrafted objects that testify to the
rich history of the area stretching back thousands of years.
Highlights include the reconstruction of a tomb from the
Necropolis of Santa Barbara and the spectacular grave goods that have been unearthed there, including necklaces, brooches, rings and other jewellery. Two inscriptions and a
stele dedicated to the God Mithras, excavated in the
Castelliere di Elleri, are also very significant. Their importance is underlined by a very precise three-dimensional exhibition.
