Built on the remains of an ancient sacred building dating back to the 10th century, the Cathedral of
Muggia was consecrated in
1263 by the Bishop of Trieste. It is dedicated to Saints John and Paul. In
1467, the exterior was enriched with white stone slabs from the
Aurisina Quarry, giving the Cathedral a more imposing appearance.
Built on a
Romanesque plan, the Cathedral has a majestic façade in the
Venetian Gothic-Renaissance style. A magnificent
rose window portraying the Madonna and Child dominates the centre of the structure, creating an atmosphere of sacredness and splendour.
Inside the church, which has
three naves, visitors can admire fragments of
frescoes that date back to the 14th century.
Processional lanterns used by ancient confraternities are also exhibited. Adding a touch of artistic grace to the sacred atmosphere is a bronze crucifix by the sculptor
Ugo Carà from Muggia. A
museum dedicated to this artist is located a short distance from the Cathedral.
The Cathedral of Muggia is therefore not only a place of worship but also an authentic treasure chest of history, art and devotion that invites visitors to experience its beauty and timeless charm.
