Cycling route around the city of Palmanova, a "must" for those visiting Friuli Venezia Giulia!
This itinerary starts from Palmanova, a fortress built from the end of the 16th century for the defense of Venice, it is a National Monument, and since 2017 has also become part of the UNESCO World Heritage. Besides the famous walls, there are many historical, architectural and natural attractions such as the bastions park with underground counter-mine galleries and the Great War and Fortress Museum of Porta Cividale. The surrounding territory offers opportunities for visits and food and wine experiences. A stop in Clauiano is recommended, an ancient medieval village that, with its stone houses, has been named one of the most beautiful villages in Italy. In Santa Maria la Longa, the poet Ungaretti wrote the famous poem "Mattina - I illuminate myself with immensity" and in front of the town hall a small literary park dedicated to him was created.
Once back in Palmanova, enjoy a picnic in the bastions park.
