This route develops among the most enchanting places of the Friuli hills, characterized by ancient castles and breathtaking views.
Route:
The loop starts from San Daniele towards the Castles of Arcano and Fagagna. Besides the castles, you can explore the Col Roncone fort, built shortly before the start of the First World War. The return is via the ancient villages of Battaglia, Madrisio, Pozzalis, and Rive d'Arcano, joining the Tagliamento cycle path (FVG6) at Villanova, and back to San Daniele del Friuli.
Food & wine:
The San Daniele DOP ham, made for centuries with the passion and dedication of strong people who know how to gift it the greatest delicacy, is an excellence that can only be produced in this limited territory. In Fagagna, you can find pestât, a preserved condiment designed to preserve in pork lard the aromas and flavors of vegetables and herbs from gardens in autumn. RECOMMENDED DISH: Crostino with pestât paired with San Daniele DOP ham
Near Fagagna, there are other castles visible with a short detour from the route: Villalta, Moruzzo, and Caporiacco.
