This itinerary takes in the most enchanting places in hilly Friuli, characterized by ancient manors and breathtaking views.
These manors can be visited during the Open Castles event, which takes place in spring (April) and autumn (October), or by reservation. The route from San Daniele towards the moraine Hills crosses the castles of Arcano and Fagagna (its ruins). However, many other castles in the vicinity of Fagagna are visible and/ or can be visited with short detours from the route: Villalta, Moruzzo, and Caporiacco. All of them retain a grim and defensive appearance, but over the centuries they have been transformed into more comfortable permanent dwellings. In addition to the castles, you can explore the Col Roncone fort, which was erected shortly before the start of the First World War. The return trip takes us through the ancient villages of Battaglia, Madrisio, Pozzalis, and Rive d'Arcano, eventually re-joining the FVG 6 Tagliamento Cycle Route at Villanova, which with the nearby village of San Daniele del Friuli offers many opportunities to sample the tasty San Daniele prosciutto crudo.
Near Fagagna are other castles that are visible with a short detour to the route: Villalta, Moruzzo and Caporiacco.
