Nestled among the hills of Fagagna, in the province of Udine, Passione Volo – Tin Toy Airplane Museum tells the story of aviation through an extraordinary collection of toys that, from the 1940s to the 1980s, inspired generations of children and adults to dream of flight.
The museum houses more than 350 items produced by the most important Japanese, German, Italian, American, Russian, and Chinese tin toy manufacturers. The collection ranges from the large four-engine airliners of now-defunct airlines to the famous Constellation and DC-7 aircraft, from the Concorde to military and cargo planes, and up to the jets and private aircraft of the 1970s and 1980s.
Particularly noteworthy is the section dedicated to aircraft bearing the Alitalia livery, together with a selection of models produced in the former Soviet Union and curiosities such as the Air Force One aircraft of the President of the United States.
Many of the toys are still in working condition and allow visitors to rediscover the charm of vintage mechanics: propellers can be set in motion, engines light up, boarding doors and cargo hatches can be opened, stewardesses can be seen moving along the fuselage, and the characteristic whistling sound of jet aircraft can be heard.
Some models still bear the marks of time and use. They are well-loved toys that testify to fantastic imaginary flights and to the stories of the children who carried them around the world.
The visit is enhanced by a section featuring specialized aviation publications from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s, available for consultation on site and offering an additional perspective on the history of civil aviation.
The museum originated from the extensive collection of Alessandro Rinaldini, a journalist and civil aviation enthusiast, and was created with the support of the Fondazione Lualdi of Fagagna. The collection is constantly evolving and enriched with new acquisitions.
