At località Russiz Superiore the traces left 50 million years ago by skillful marine builders survive. This fossil geosite will take you back in time, making you discover a rather unusual landscape compared to the vineyards we are used to.

The route starts from the camper parking at the Subida di Cormons riding center. After a first uphill section (20% gradient on a natural, sometimes uneven surface) crossing a chestnut, oak and hop hornbeam forest, you arrive at the ridge of the vineyard-cultivated hill.

Here at the fork, we turn left and after following a flat stretch among vineyards (from this point you can take the detour that connects to the route in the Piana del Preval) you reach another wooded section, at the end of which the view fully opens.

We are on the hill of Russiz Superiore in Capriva del Friuli, which preserves a small but very rich regional geosite containing traces of an ancient coral reef. We continue left to reach the heart of the geosite, namely the monolith, marked by cypresses and an explanatory panel.

The route between vineyards and olive groves is very panoramic, ranging from the villages of the Slovene Brda to the reliefs of the Prealps and Julian Alps.

    Author’s recommendation

Along the route it is possible to stop at the Russiz Superiore farm for a tasting of wines grown among the fossils and to visit the historic winery.
