Hike through the greenery of the Collio woods, where the Rio Smiardar flows, a watercourse descending from the hills behind Monte Quarin and running through the valley floor at the foot of the mountain itself and Monte Mò.
Walking in the cool shade of oak, hornbeam, and some birch woods, you will traverse the valley to discover this fascinating primitive insect or to enjoy the springtime undergrowth blooms.
Ideal for those who want to immerse themselves in the wild soul of Collio, where fortunately the vineyards have not yet arrived. The route follows the Rio Smiardar, a watercourse largely unmodified by humans, thus allowing the presence of the rare dragonfly Cordulegaster heros, unmistakable for its yellow and black colors, found only in Friuli Venezia Giulia in Italy.
Mainly wooded trail on easy hiking paths with streams and fords depending on the weather in previous days.
I recommend combining the walk with a stop and walk to the nearby Plessiva wood or the Celestial Path route.
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.
Area prone to puddles in case of rain with possible short uneven sections.
You can start from Brazzano or leave the car in the Plessiva area/on provincial road 14 near the Rio information sign.
Recommended period: spring for the blooms and the presence of flowing water in the stream; July and August to observe the rare dragonfly.
