Challenging circular route to discover the Malghe up to Monte Cjastelat, where you encounter a unique landscape characterized by spectacular flora and fauna.
From the Piancavallo infopoint (starting point of the route) turn left onto Via Collalto. Continue uphill on Via Collalto until you reach the electricity cabin on the left side of the road. Follow the signs for the Passeggiata delle Malghe and the white-red trail markers, entering the beech forest. Staying at altitude, you cross sinkholes and depressions. Follow the edge of the sinkhole, staying on the unmarked forest road. The road continues with a slight ascent through the beech forest and intersects CAI 971 coming from Pian delle More. Turning right, you soon reach a plateau, a meeting point of several trails. Join CAI 915 which crosses a long-forgotten area of the plateau and skirts the Casera Dietro il Cjastelat area.
The landscape you cross is worth a stop: meadows and woods that show signs of abrupt microclimate changes and strong thermal inversions. The dwarf pines surround the valley meadows and the beech trees cover the surrounding peaks. Roe deer, chamois, deer, black grouse, hazel grouse, and partridges animate the clearings. Lynx tracks have been spotted several times.
The summit of Monte Cjastelat is at the end of the ascent. Despite its modest height, its isolated position offers a vast, unexpected panorama. Descend from Cjastelat following CAI 915 towards Pala Fontana, along the wide ridge opening towards the plain to the south and the mountains to the north. After passing Pala Fontana, the descent begins surrounded by various blossoms and breathtaking views. Pay attention to the trail. CAI 915 ends at Forcella di Giais at the junction with CAI 988. Turning right, follow CAI 988 for a stretch until the junction with CAI 985. Keeping left on CAI 985, pass near Casera Valfredda and then Casera Caseratte. Follow the white-red signs for the Passeggiata delle Malghe.
Soon, the large sinkhole appears again. Cross the forest road and resume the initial trail to Via Collalto and finally back to the starting point.
