The summit of Monte Cuarnan is a privileged point from which to admire Friuli. Starting from Malga Cuarnan, along an easy dirt road lined with beeches, you reach the green meadows of Somp Palis, from which you quickly ascend along the ridge line to the E. Pischiutti Shelter, near which you can admire the sculpture "Fie da l'Aiar" by G. Patat. Continuing along the obvious trail, you reach the Chiesa del Redentore (the highest point at 1370 m), from which you can admire a 360-degree panorama: to the north, the Carnic Alps stand out in the distance, while Chiampon slopes eastward into the Julian Alps; looking south, the moraine hills descend into the Friulian Plain and (on the clearest days) the Adriatic Sea, while to the west you can see Piancavallo and the Friulian Dolomites. The descent follows the first steps of the ascent route, then turns north at the first junction, quickly descending to Sella Foredor and returning to Malga Cuarnan.
Author’s recommendation
Avoid ascending during the central hours of summer days, the loop is mostly exposed to the sun and there are no water sources along the route.
