From the Piancavallo tourist office, turn left and walk along Via Collalto towards Barcis, up to the snow removal vehicle depot. To the right, continue along the service road that runs alongside the snow vehicle depot.

After about a hundred meters, take a left and follow the white-red signs of the Sentiero Policreti (CAI 990a), then stay on the path until the Casera Collalt, which takes its name from the homonymous mountain and stands on the Piancavallo plateau. A short detour to the right of the route is suggested before the hut to enjoy a splendid lookout with a wide panorama of the Friulian plain.

Once the path is resumed and the hut is passed, cross the paved Castaldia-Collalto road. Follow the CAI signs of the Passeggiata delle Malghe. At the intersection with the forest road, turn right and climb briefly until reaching a large area, to the left identify the CAI Sentiero Fontanuzze signpost. Follow the trail up to the CAI 985 signpost. Here begins the Fontanuzze-CAI 985 connector. The path, gently descending and with a wide view of the plain, reaches CAI 985. Follow the CAI 985 path downhill up to the junction with the connector to CAI 917 former Costa Grande. Follow the connector to CAI 917.

The two connector trails, Fontanuzze-985 and 985-917 Costa Grande, are particularly enjoyable for both the wonderful views and the pleasantly relaxing slope. Through the seasons, they present themselves as an extraordinary natural botanical garden.

Turn left on 917 and ascend towards Piancavallo until the forest road. Continue left and pass the Casera del Medico (m. 1120). After about 100 meters, at the fork, turn right and continue in the direction indicated by the CAI 985 signs.

With a short climb, you reach one of the most peculiar places of Piancavallo: the wide glaciokarst valley. Cross the basin up to the forest road crossed earlier. Turn left and continue until Casera Caseratte. Follow the indication Passeggiata della Malghe-Piancavallo and continue along the route. Cross the intersection with the forest road and follow the white-red signs. The path ends in Via Collalto. Following the paved road, return to the starting point.
