A simple and short route starting from Pian della Sega, where during the Great War there was a building used as an infirmary of which ruins are still visible, climbs a beautiful beech forest and in a few minutes reaches the spectacular waterfall.

Its origin is due to the geological nature of the territory: the massif of Monte Canin is made up of permeable limestone rocks in the upper part, resting on a base of semi-permeable dolomitic rocks. This causes waters infiltrating the depths of the karst plateau to reemerge at the encounter with dolomitic rocks creating the suggestive Fontanon di Goriuda. About a hundred meters above the waterfall, the small stream comes out of a cave that can be visited with a speleological guide in complete safety.

At the base of the waterfall is a small crystal-clear pond from which the stream flows, forming another series of small yet suggestive waterfalls completing the visit.

    Author’s recommendation

The Julian Prealps Nature Park organizes guided caving visits inside the Fontanon di Goriuda Cave during summer. Follow the Park's social profiles to find out the dates.

It is recommended to visit in autumn to enjoy the beech forest foliage

In colder winters the waterfall can freeze completely making the environment even more suggestive. If considering a winter visit, crampons or, even better, ice cleats are recommended due to the abundant presence of ice on the ground.
