Moderate effort hike to a satellite peak of the Jof di Montasio that rises above the splendid, homonymous, plateau; many ibex!
The hike starts from the parking at the lower edge of the Montasio plateau and climbs through meadows dotted with many mountain huts. After passing near Rif. Di Brazzà the ascent becomes steeper and goes extensively along the ledges of the chain of peaks above the plateau. The views over Val Raccolana and the Canin group are magnificent and widen with altitude gain. The trail crosses green slopes where encounters with tame ibex are practically certain and aims at the upper notch between Cima di Terrarossa and Cima Gambon, at the outlet of the Huda Paliza channel. From the saddle, via rocks and clear tracks, the Cima di Terrarossa at 2349m is reached with spectacular views now also opening on the rear Jof Fuart group and the green Val Saisera. The descent follows the ascent route and, with suitable equipment, can be varied through the Leva and Ceria Merlone paths (reserved for adequately equipped experts).
Derived from the technical difficulty and the stamina requirements.
Due caution is required when passing below herds of ibex due to stones displaced by the animals that can become dangerous.
The nearest local public transport stop is at Sella Nevea, below the Montasio plateau.
The starting point is reachable with about 1.5 hours of additional ascent.
From the village of Chiusaforte located on the S.S.13 that from Stazione Carnia leads to Tarvisio area, take the Val Raccolana along S.P.76 up to the locality of Sella Nevea. After passing some hotels, at the right hairpin bend, take the municipal road towards the Piani del Montasio (signs present) to climb steeply to the plateau at 1500m altitude.
