Challenging circular route leading to Casera Montelonga where you can enjoy the splendid panorama opening onto the summits of Raut, Castello, Resettum.
Start from the PromoTurismoFVG Infopoint and turn left onto Via Collalto. Continue uphill on Via Collalto until you reach the electricity cabin on the left side of the road. Follow the signs for Passeggiata delle Malghe and the white-red trail markers, entering the beech forest. Upon reaching the large sinkhole, cross the forest road and proceed toward Casera Caseratte.
Pay attention to the signage. Turn left onto trail CAI 985, which gently ascends through meadows and beeches, passing below Casera Valfredda. After passing a small saddle, the route continues with a pleasant descent to the junction with CAI 988. Turn right and continue on CAI 988 up to Casera di Giais. The long traverse develops on the southern side of the Cavallo group, offering wide views of the Friulian plain and blooms of rare species. After passing the casera, continue on the common section of CAI 988-CAI 986, following the signs. This section is the most intact on the plateau because it is traveled by few hikers. The forest opens into wide clearings. At times, sinkholes and swallow holes typical of the karst landscape appear. At the next junction, take CAI 986 until you reach CAI 987, which you follow left for a short stretch.
Finally, take CAI 970, always to the left, to reach Casera Montelonga. The splendid panorama opens onto the summits of Raut, Castello, Resettum, Duranno, and the Ampezzo Dolomites. From the casera, take CAI 971, which crosses the beech and fir forest with gentle ups and downs. Observing the vegetation reveals signs of sudden microclimate changes. The first stretch follows the forest road, then leaves it. Stay on CAI 971 until you reach a plateau.
Continue briefly along trail CAI 971, then turn left along the forest road and find yourself again at the large sinkhole. Retrace the last stretch of the Passeggiata delle Malghe to return to Collalto and the starting point.
