The Generator Cave

The first stop of the itinerary is the Generator Cave, a karstic cave also known as Mt. Querceto Cave (Pejca na Grmadi in Slovenian). The name derives from the use made by the Austro-Hungarians during the Great War: inside, in fact, some generators were installed to supply electricity to the front lines.

Outside, you can still (hardly) see the ducts that used to house the electric cables. An artificial opening allows visiting this cave, walking then along a corridor, where you can see two rock-cut niches. The passage dug by soldiers is quite wide as it needed to accommodate an underground control room and the military personnel in charge of operations.

The corridor ends with the remains of a staircase that once led to the cave's natural entrance. Here, during the war, a sort of dry-stone chimney was built to allow the generator fumes flowing out of the cave. Today, unfortunately, this structure has collapsed over the concrete platforms that were built for the generators.
