Over the centuries, probably starting from the late-ancient age, the geographical position along the ancient route that led beyond the Alps has favoured the defence position of the
castle of Cassacco, many of whose
original characteristics are still
intact.
The current building
dates back to the thirteenth century with some later changes. The feudal fights never destroyed the castle, which has therefore preserved most of its structures, with some changes made in the late Middle Ages and in the fifteenth century, when the
small church of St. Mary of the Assumption was built.
The castle of Cassacco is made up of two quadrangular towers, once crenellated, which flank the central body next to which other later buildings stand. The walls and the allures, too, have preserved very well. The older part, probably of the early medieval age, is identified in the foundations of the south tower.
A curious fact
According to a legend, this castle and the near castle of Tricesimo, which for over a century belonged to the same family (the Montegnaccos), were connected by an
underground passage, to which one could access going down forty steps and which has never been found.
