Antiquarium Historical Museum
In Roman times, Camporosso was seat of a customs station along the road connecting Aquileia to Noricum, today’s Austria. The importance of this centre is proven by a number of archaeological findings now kept in this Antiquarium.
The most interesting part of the collection refers to Mithra, the ancient and mysterious God of light to whom a special site of worship in this area was dedicated in imperial times. The rich series of archeological evidence is organised with an educational and informative criterion that allows studying the spread of the cult of Mithras in this area and to highlight its cultural and iconographic aspects. There are numerous inscriptions that cast light on the organisation and on the history of the old customs post together with some interesting sculptures among which the monument inscribing Mithras birth from the stone, the statuette of Cautopates, Mithra’s companion, and a remarkable bronze bust of Luna/Selene.
