Challenging route to the summit of Mount Coglians, the highest in Friuli Venezia Giulia. The climb requires no special equipment and is not too exposed, but requires experience of alpine environments and a willingness to overcome strenuous scree.
We leave the car at the parking lot of Rifugio Tolazzi (1340 m); we inform the forestry road that circumnavigates it and find at the second hairpin bend the first of the shortcuts of path 143 (red-white markings) that allow us to cut the hairpin bends of the long cartroad accessing Rifugio Marinelli. We pass the meadows of Malga Morareto (refreshment point, 1710 m) and climb to Forcella Morareet, beyond which stands the building of Rifugio Marinelli (2112 m).
From the Marinelli Refuge there are two possibilities (study on app the possible routes): take trail 143, which comes off the cart track behind the refuge (this trail partly climbs Pic Chiadin and then descends to a grassy saddle; after this, the only tricky point is to overcome, with the help of metal rope, a couple of short exposed paretine); or ford trail 145, and at the fork at elevation 2120 continue uphill. Both trails converge at elevation 2300 m.
Now you face the first of the two scree slopes of the Coglians: the longer and more troublesome one. Slippery bottom, steep slope. The scree ends at an altitude of 2525 m, where the path bends to the left; we have to climb a natural stepped paretina after which we walk in comfortable bends on the rock; on 2600 abundant it is the turn of the second scree: shorter and easier than the previous one, however challenging. We thus reach the point where the path enters a small gully uphill, on the left (marker); from here to the top, we have a couple of exposed passages and some moments in which to help ourselves with our hands - easy. From the end of the scree, it's 15 minutes to the summit of Mount Coglians (2788 m).
Incredible views, ring the bell, descend the ascent route.
