Description: MADE Trek, what is it?
Spread over a total of 125 kilometres, with this proposal we will cover the most representative and impressive 75 kilometres of the route, reaching the highest point at 2,367 metres.
The grandeur of the landscapes and the variety of the terrain on this route are matched only by the warmth and hospitality offered by the refuges and mountain huts at the end of the day. The unusual contrasts in the landscapes, the changing colours and textures of the mountains, the curious mix of Italian and Austrian influences make this hike fantastic, breathtaking scenery and the rich cuisine of the refuges!

The trek begins in Pierabech, Forni Avoltri, a short distance from the Goccia di Carnia mineral water bottling plant, where we will arrive via the transfer service arranged by the agency.
We will ascend from the car park at 1,050m towards the Fleons Valley, along the paths and mule tracks of the mountain pasture. Once we reach the Sissanis dairy hut, we will continue through the quiet valley, which will take us over the Sella di Sissanis pass at 1,987m, with
views of the Pera and Bordaglia lakes, of glacial origin and extremely picturesque. The route turns eastwards, reaching the Giramondo Pass and descending towards
the amphitheatre of the Malga di Volaia (Volayer Alm) in Austrian territory. The peaks of these mountains create an extremely fascinating setting, crowned, at the Volaia Pass, by the splendid lake of the same name. Watching over the scene from above is the summit of Mt.
Coglians, at 2,780m, the highest peak in Friuli and of incredible geological origin. After a beer at the WolayerSee Hutte, all that remains is to descend towards Collina di Forni Avoltri where, at the Tolazzi Refuge, at an altitude of 1,350m, an evening of
relaxation and a pleasant night’s rest await us.
17 km, elevation gain 1000 m, approx. 7 hours
Day 2 – 8 September
After a hearty breakfast, we’ll leave the refuge and set off up the Rio Fulin valley, passing close to Malga Morareto and crossing over into the valley of the But stream near the Marinelli Refuge, the oldest refuge in Friuli, at 2,112 metres. We are
near the summit of Monte Floriz and the view is incredible, stretching from the cliffs of Creta della Cjanevate (2,769 m) to Lake Plotta, and on to the ridges of Pal Piccolo and Pal Grande.
Descending along an easy mule track, we reach Malga Plotta and Malga Collina Grande at 1,520m before following a path through fir and alder woods which, via a long traverse, leads us into the secluded, green valley
of the But, a favourite haunt for numerous ungulates such as deer. After a quick climb to the ruined huts of Chiaula Bassa and Alta at 1,568m, with a little effort we will reach the open Malga Lavareit at 1,460m, where we will spend the
last hours of the day enjoying the sunset over the opposite border peaks.
17 km, elevation gain 937 m, approx. 6–7 hours
Day 3 – 9 September
A leisurely stage to immerse yourself in the history of these borderlands. The mountains forming the backdrop to our journey were among the most fiercely contested during the First World War, when the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies
faced off for years on the towering ridges. We will leave Malga Lavareit to descend the wooded ridges of Monte Terzo towards the valley floor of the But stream. The paths wind through this area, passing through clearings on the edge of ancient woods and past isolated stavoli,
characteristic rural buildings. Once we reach the village of Timau, we will visit the ossuary chapel and the small but fascinating Great War museum, one of the most comprehensive on the entire Alpine front. There will be time to reflect on the stories of the soldiers and the Carnic porters, tireless women who made a vital contribution during the days of battle. Finally, we will climb up to the Promosio mountain pasture, skirting the ‘bandito’ forest of Timau, a remnant of the woods once protected by the Most Serene Republic of Venice. The Promosio mountain pasture lies in an enchanting green amphitheatre that will leave everyone spellbound.
12.7 km, elevation gain 790 m, approx. 6 hours
Day Four – 10 September
At dawn, we’ll have the pleasure of learning the ancient art of making cheese and butter from the cheesemaker! We’ll be able to watch first-hand as he processes the milk that was milked the previous evening
from the cows in the nearby barn. After this interesting diversion, we will climb to the nearby Promosio Pass at 1,792m to enter Austrian territory, heading for the Bischof Alm
and the Zollner See Hutte, near the beautiful little lake of Zollner. A succession of green ridges, smoothed by geological eras, will take us back to Italy on the descent towards the Casera di Valbertat Bassa (now
the Cippo farmhouse), with the limestone and majestic walls of the Zermula in view. In the evening, there’ll be plenty of laughter over dinner: the farmhouse staff are a guarantee of that!
19 km, elevation gain 800m, approx. 7 hours
Day Five – 11 September
The final day of this splendid trek.
We will set off from the Paularo area, walking across the highlands of Lanza and Val Dolce, a borderland where legends, ancient history and modern times converge.
Mountainous terrain where dairy farmers, soldiers and smugglers have left their indelible mark.
Once we reach the Cason di Lanza Pass, with the unique monolith of Zuc de la Guardia (1,910 m) in view, we will cross the Lanza plateau towards the Sella di Val Dolce at 1,781 m. Nearby, we will visit the Grotta di Attila, a mysterious underground formation that can be explored
with ease for several dozen metres. We will continue beneath the reddish walls of the Creta di Aip (2,279 m), amidst a myriad of rocks of the most varied shapes and colours, a result of the geological vicissitudes of this particular area. Once we reach
the Sella di Aip at 1,945m, we will descend through the flower-filled meadows of Pramollo, in Austria, passing the summit of Monte Madrizze and entering the Winkel valley, where our adventure will end near the Baita Winkel at 1,470m, where
the transfer will be waiting to take us back to Tolmezzo.
14 km, elevation gain 670 m, approx. 6 hours
