A route where you cycle among the peaks of Val Aupa, discovering mountain villages, ancient traditions, and authentic flavors.
Route
In the valley of the Pontebbana stream - border between the Kingdom of Italy and the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1866 to 1918 - a moderately challenging bike route is travelled for length, elevation gain and climb. It takes place on paved roads with little local traffic and on the Alpe Adria cycle path (FVG1). From Pontebba the route winds following signs for Studena Alta towards Sella di Cereschiatis, which opens Val Aupa. Then it continues towards Moggio Udinese, before returning to close the loop.
Food & wine
Passing through Moggio Udinese, look for brovadâr, fermented turnips layered with cabbage leaves, born out of the necessity to preserve food during winter. For the same purpose, sasaka was also created, a creamy mixture made from surplus cured meats, lard, and spices, an ancient mountain sustenance eaten as a snack by woodcutters spread on bread, and now enhances many traditional recipes. RECOMMENDED DISH: Brovadâr soup
