Carnival of Sappada - Plodar Vosenòcht 2026: Sunday of the Gentry - Hearn Sunntach

Description

One of the most characteristic traditions of Sappada / Plodn, a linguistic enclave of German origin, is "Carnevale (vosenòcht), an important carnival time when local traditions and folk culture are re-lived, when customs and folklore mingle and when opportunities arise for games, fun and transgression. Masks (letter) play the key role: to disguise themselves completely and avoid being recognised by other villagers, masked figures wear wooden masks (lòrvn) carved by local craftsmen and often handed down from over generations.
Carnival celebrations in Sappada take place, as in the past, on the three Sundays before Lent, and are dedicated to three different social classes:  the “Sunday of the Gentry” (hearn sunntach), evoking the wealthy class and an opportunity to show off the most refined costumes. Masked figures wear the appropriate clothes depending on the Sunday and perform amusing situations that involve spectators and the people of the homes they visit.
