The Julian Alps are a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve

The Julian Alps Biosphere Reserve was established in June 2019 and covers 11 mountain municipalities in Friuli Venezia Giulia: Artegna, Chiusaforte, Dogna, Gemona del Friuli, Lusevera, Moggio Udinese, Montenars, Resia, Resiutta, Taipana, and Venzone.

This extraordinary territory, which covers over 700 km², is a mosaic of biodiversity and ancient cultures, where encounters with rare species of flora and fauna are not exceptions but a constant reality of everyday life.

Hiking trails suitable for all levels, museums that tell the history and traditions of the peoples who have animated and still animate these lands, natural environments in which to immerse yourself to admire the biodiversity, and peaks to reach to let your gaze wander beyond the border.

In an area of approximately 700 square kilometers stretching from the Montasio and Canin mountains to the northern edge of the Friuli plain, there are many guided activities organized by various operators, catering to all tastes and for all seasons.

What is a biosphere reserve?

The intergovernmental program “Man and the Biosphere” (MAB), launched by UNESCO in 1971, aims to promote a balanced relationship between humans and nature. Based on scientific principles, it promotes the protection of biodiversity and the adoption of sustainable development practices.
Through an integrated approach involving natural and social sciences, economics, and education, the program promotes the protection of natural and anthropogenic ecosystems.
MAB encourages the sustainable development of territories, supporting the responsible management of natural resources for the well-being of local communities and the protection of the environment.

Thanks to close collaboration between the Julian Prealps Regional Nature Park and Triglav National Park, on July 5, 2024, the Julian Alps were recognized as a UNESCO Transboundary Biosphere Reserve, representing a single large natural “heart” that acts as a hinge between different landscapes, ecosystems, and cultures.
