Medieval Village of Villafredda

[14. century]

The village is a rare example of a medieval fortified settlement, complete with walls and towers. The settlement may date back to Roman times, but the first records of the fortified village of Villafrigida dates back to 1319. By the end of the century, the property was taken over by the Manotovani family, who then took the name Liruti.
The church visible today was built in 1672, at the behest of the noblemen Giorgio and Giovanni Battista Liruti, and was dedicated to St. George the Martyr. In 1694, Giacomo Liruti added a “camerino” (a small room) to allow the women of the household to attend Mass without going into the church, and changed its name to the Holy Trinity. The building features a rectangular hall and wooden beams, an initial square apse, and a subsequent rectangular one, higher than the hall. On the corner of the gabled façade there is a circular section turret, on the opposite side the bell tower, with four round single-lancet windows made of stone and pebbles. The interior houses the altar with a 19th-century marble altarpiece depicting the Annunciation by Adeodato Pariotti.
In the villa's park, there is a Giant Tuia, rising more than 240 meters, listed in regional and national land registers of monumental trees.
