A day with Charles V in Porcia

Porcia, 16th October 1532: Emperor of the Holy Roman Empire, as well as being King of Spain and Prince of the Low Countries, Charles V crossed through Porcia’s south gate after defeating Suleiman the Magnificent’s Ottomans in battle. After giving the victorious emperor a dignified welcome, the castle's aristocrats and Count Antonio di Porcia set up a lavish banquet accompanied by dancing and singing. After the festivities were over Charles V was put up for the night in a room at the castle.
To commemorate the event in 1987 Gruppo Storico Carlo V was created which, in August, together with the Sagra dell’Assunta, celebrated this monument in a historical re-evocation with dancing and a costume parade through the town centre.
This year, too, on Sunday 4th August, a great many re-enacters including me (il Paggio) walked through the streets of Porcia to wait for Charles V’s arrival on horseback. Once the latter arrived, thanked all those present and eulogised his latest victories, certain re-enacters performed period dances to live music as members of the Corpo di ballo Rinascimentale Carlo V.

Seeing pages, ladies, counts and emperors wandering around Porcia is always a fun experience, also because Porcia and its walls, castle and Torre dell’Orologio are easily turned into Renaissance town for the day.

If you have never taken part in this re-enactment, note it down in your diary for next year.
